According to Mark Lagon, director of the office against human trafficking of the U.S. State Department, Colombia “made strong efforts to enforce the law on matters of investigation, indictments and convictions”.In a report, presented by the State Department, the U.S. government highlights how Colombia has increased its funding of NGOs dedicated to help victums of human trafficking. There are some areas that need improving though. According to the report, Colombia should do more to identify the victims of human trafficking, in order to be able to help them.About 800,000 people are victim of human trafficking worldwide, mostly to be exploited in the sex industry or for cheap manual labor. 80 percent of them are women and girls. 50 percent are minors.
