The Ambassador of Colombia to the United States sent a letter to liberal congressmen regarding the progress and commitments of the Colombian government to the protection of vulnerable populations and human rights defenders.
Ambassador Carolina Barco sent a letter to Democratic congressmen James McGovern and Fran Wolf regarding Colombian human rights, according to a press release issued by the Colombian government.
McGovern is an outspoken critic of President Alvaro Uribe and has been active on issues of human rights in Colombia. Opposition Senator and Nobel Peace Prize nominee Piedad Cordoba earlier this year proposed that McGovern be the foreign guarantor on the commission for the release of FARC hostages.
He was also one of the group of Democratic congressmen that circulated a letter documenting their concerns that the military bases agreement would adversely affect Colombia’s development.
