The Partido de La U today announced their compliance with former Defense Minister Juan Manuel Santos´ refusal to take the place of Luis Carlos Restrepo, who resigned as party leader on Monday.
In a meeting held on Tuesday, the National Board for the Uribista party unanimously requested that Restrepo maintain his position as head of the Party following Santos refusal to take up the position after Restrepo’s resignation.
According to newspaper El Espectador, the directorate of the Party wrote a letter to Restrepo in which it assured the former Peace Commissioner that he had the board´s full “appreciation and support”.
The members of Partido de La U sollicited in this letter that Restrepo take “personal reflection” time to reconsider the conditions of his resignation.
In concluding the letter, the Party reiterated their unconditional support for Colombia’s President, Alvaro Uribe, as well as support for the constitutional referendum that would permit the continuation of Uribe’s current government.
