The Colombian government said Sunday that it will not send a new list of candidates for Prosecutor General to the Supreme Court after the Court rejected the candidates on the Presidency’s shortlist.
According to the government’s statement, the president fulfilled his constitutional duty as he offered the Supreme Court a list of three people sufficiently qualified to become Colombia’s next Prosecutor General.
The president’s list is composed of a former Colombian ambassador to the AOS, a former state councilor, and a lawyer, who, according to the government, are competent to fight criminals, to hold managerial jobs, and to lead a 20-thousand employee organization.
However, NGOs denounced that none of the three candidates have any experience with penal law and that one of them was suspected of bribery.
Colombian Prosecutor General is elected by the Supreme Court from a list offered by the President.
Current Prosecutor General Guillermo Mendoza said that if the Court did not choose his replacement soon he would leave in October.
