The Colombian national team failed to deliver a good performance ahead
of crucial World Cup qualifiers, as they were beaten 2-1 by Venezuela
in Wednesday’s friendly.
Venezuela’s Jose Manuel Rey scored the opening goal in the first half at New York’s Giants Stadium, but Colombia forward Radamel Falcao did well to equalise in the 39th minute.
The winning goal came in the 72nd minute, as Vizcarrondo of Venezuela was left unmarked in the penalty area and headed home from a left-winged cross.
The result won’t help the level of pressure that has been mounting on the Colombian team and manager Eduardo Lara, who face a tough challenge in what remains of the qualification campaign.
Colombia face Ecuador and Uruguay in qualifiers next month and will need to beat both to keep a realistic chance of making it to next year’s World Cup.
