1,150 members of Colombia’s Armed Forces are being investigated for
murder, the country’s Prosecutor General’s Office announced Friday.
The murder investigations include all cases of the so-called ‘false positives’, the murder of civilians to make their death appear as insurgents killed in combat and so making the war against illegal armed groups look more effective.
Of the 1,708 Colombians who were allegedly murdered by members of the security forces, 110 are women and 53 are minors.
The Prosecutor General’s Office has 321 outstanding arrest warrants against members of the Armed Forces. 474 others already are in jail on murder charges. 236 members of the army and police have been charged.
Colombia is currently being visited by the United Nation’s Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial Executions, who announced to be extra vigilant on extrajudicial execution cases that remain in impunity.
