Following fan violence in Colombian football on the weekend,
politicians are suggesting several different ideas to fight the problem.
Congress members Mauricio Parodi and Nicolás Uribe on Tuesday added another suggestion, saying that clubs whose fans misbehave, should be punished by taking away points in their competitions.
As example, Parodi mentioned a situation in a qualification match for Europe’s 2008 Championship, between Denmark and Sweden. Danish fans misbehaved in that game and the Denmark national team consequently lost points. The politician claims that following that heavy measure, the Danish Football Association did more to avoid similar incidents from happening.
“Maybe it is a way for the hooligans to come to their senses, knowing that their behaviour is hurting their beloved club,” added Uribe, who had already called for a temporary closure of Bogotá’s El Campín stadium.
On Saturday, Atlético Nacional fans caused chaos in Medellín following yet another defeat of their side in the Copa Mustang. A day later, a Deportivo Cali player got hurt by a rock thrown at his team’s bus by a Millonarios supporter.
