Colombia’s National Registry is investigating four of its officials for
allegedly leaking secret information to the organizers of the
referendum about the re-election of President Álvaro Uribe.
“We want to establish if these officials cracked security codes of the Registry’s databases and handed them to the referendum organizers,” Registry chief Carlos Ariel Sánchez told radio station La FM.
If the National Electoral Council confirms the alleged irregularities, his office will not certify the referendum, which could end the possibilities for Uribe to run for presidency again.
The possible leak is one of many irregularities in the referendum that is being investigated. Suspected money launderer DMG allegedly facilitated the recollection of signatures and the organizers so far have failed to clarify who financed the referendum.
