A baby girl was born on Friday aboard a Colombian naval vessel off the coast of the western port city Buenaventura.
A navy rapid response unit was sent to the island village of Juanchaco near the Bay of Buenaventura, after a distress call was made about a woman having very strong labor contractions and severe pain.
After just a few minutes aboard the vessel the woman’s water broke and moments later Milagro Garcia Mosquera was born. A crew member who “had no experience in the subject” delivered the child and gave encouragement to the new mother.
Milagro and her mother were transported to a hospital in Buenaventura in apparent good health.
In a statement from their website, the navy reaffirmed its “commitment to safeguarding life at sea, and our crew will act whenever they have to regardless of the hardships they have to face.”
This is the second recorded birth onboard a vessel of the navy’s Pacific fleet; a baby girl was born aboard a ship off the coast of Valle del Cauca in May of 2010.
Colombia’s navy has posted a YouTube video of the birth that is shared below. Colombia Reports cautions readers that the images are graphic.
