Independiente Medellín are through to the group phase of the 2009 Copa
Libertadores, following a goalless draw at Peñarol in Uruguay.
DIM had already crushed Peñarol 4-0 last week and the away match only seemed to be a formality. As it turned out, the Uruguayans could not cause an upset and Medellín easily defended their comfortable aggregate lead.
Medellin has gained access to this qualification round by finishing first in the combined ranking of the 2008 opening and closing tournaments, and join 2008 champions Boyacá Chicó and América de Cali in the group phase.
Independiente join América, Brazilian giants Sao Paulo and Uruguayan side Defensor in Group 4 of the continent’s most prestigious club tournament. In fact, DIM’s first match will be away to Sao Paulo while América travel to face Defensor.
Boyacá Chicó were drawn into Group 7, with Gremio of Brazil, Aurora of Bolivia and the winner of the clash between Universidad de Chile and Mexican outfit Pachuca.
