Senator Armando Benedetti was inaugurated to the First Committee of the Senate Tuesday, despite allegations that the ex-Senate president had ties with paramilitary groups, reported local media.
The Supreme Court has dismissed the charges that Benedetti sought to influence the legislative agenda to benefit paramilitaries due to insufficient evidence. However, the Senator stands to lose his new post should any links to paramilitary groups be discovered.
Benedetti was also facing accusations that he violated government protocol by presiding over the congressional session that made the final ruling on his promotion and participating in legislative debates after the Supreme Court opened its investigation.
Colombia’s Inspector General ultimately ruled that Benedetti did not violate government protocol on either account.
