People constructing a dam in the central Colombian district of Madrid have found human remains thought to be that of an indigenous tribe.
Workers also found pottery pieces and vessels while removing earth with a backhoe, reported local media.
Community and authorities speculate that it could be an indigenous burial ground due to the size of the area where the remains were found.
“The place is as big as a football field. It’s cordoned off by the National Police, because some people tried to take these potential archaeological items,” said Alvaro Anaya Vanegas, Culture Coordinator for Madrid municipality.
Vanegas asked the environmental authorities to order the contractor to temporarily suspend any work with heavy machinery so that the human remains and handcrafted pieces were not destroyed.
