Colombian opposition senator Piedad Córdoba says she has been trying to
arrange with President Álvaro Uribe and the government’s High
Commissioner of Peace to arrange something about the announced release
of six FARC hostages.
According to the senator, several relatives of the to be released hostages did meet with the President and she’s conficent the president won’t do anything to ruin the release.
She agreed with Uribe that the release shouldn’t be made into a public relations stunt of the FARC, but does want guarantees from the government that the release won’t end up in a shoot out between the army and guerrillas and insist on forming an international commission to guarantee a safe release.
The President had earlier rejected any foreign meddling in the announced release.
Córdoba says she still expects the hostages to be released in the first weeks of January.
