Former Interior and Justice Minister and prominent member of the
Conservative Party Carlos Holguín asks Conservatives in Congress not
to vote in favor of Colombian President Álvaro Uribe’s re-election.
According to the ex-Minister, who is expected to run for the 2010 Presidency himself, Uribe himself had asked him to tell the Conservatives to skip the re-election.
“I am the most Uribista of Uribistas and support a re-election more than anyone, but I don’t think there will be neither a referendum nor a re-election. The conditions aren’t there,” Holguín told reporters Monday.
Conservatives shouldn’t be betting on a referendum that is uncertain to be approved to be left without other options if the referendum is sunk, Holguín said.
Supporters of Uribe in Congress want a constitutional change to give the current President the possibility to run for office again. Millions of Colombians signed a referendumdemanding this change, but the referendum’s come under scrutiny because of its shady finances.
