Both Ecuador and Venezuela express their desire to improve relations with Colombia, despite recent allegations that Colombia’s intelligence agency DAS spied on Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa.
On Saturday, Correa told national press that “some do not want relations between Ecuador and Colombia to improve.” However, the Ecuadorean head of state hopes that Colombian authorities will thoroughly investigate the spying allegations.
Correa also said he hoped to be present at the August 7 inauguration of President-elect Juan Manuel Santos, who is wanted by an Ecuadorean judge for his role in a cross-border attack on a FARC camp in 2008.
On Sunday, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez told the Colombian ambassador to Caracas that he was hopeful relations would improve, after diplomatic ties were cut and trade was restricted due to Chavez’s protests against the use of Colombian military bases and airports by the U.S. army.
