Uribe accepts election defeat, congratulates winners

Colombia’s former President Alvaro Uribe on Monday accepted the defeats of the majority of candidates he endorsed in Sunday’s local elections, and congratulates the winners.

In a press release, Uribe said that he was pleased to have supported candidates like Enrique Peñalosa in Bogota or Marta de D’hart in Bucaramanga even though they did not win.

The ex-president went on to congratulate Gustavo Petro as the new mayor of Bogota, Sergio Fajardo as the new governor of Antioquia, and Medellin’s new mayor, Anibal Gaviria.

Uribe invited the U Party to take the victory obtained and assume a “constructive attitude” and to “assume a patriotic one set against mayors and governors of contrary tendencies.”
