U.S. airline company Spirit Airlines says it will be offering cheap direct flights between Medellín and Fort Lauderdale, Florida in 2009.

The airline company says it will start the flights in March. As a start-up discount, Spirit offers tickets for the maximum price of US$93, depending on teh season and how much in adance is booked. Taxes are excluded from the price.
Colombia’s Ministry of Tourism welcomes Spirit’s decision. “The arrival of Spirit marks a new era in the history of tourism in Medellín and Antioquia. We are now hoping the best prices will allow more tourism in the region and the country,” vice-Minister of Tourism Oscar Rueda Garcia told newspaper El Tiempo.
Spirit Airlines already has direct flights to Bogotá and Cartagena.
