The Colombian government announced Friday that it will release the official statistic of people kidnapped in the country within the next few weeks.
Defense Minister Juan Manuel Santos told Radio Caracol that the government has been working on the “purification” of the official figure for several weeks. He said they were checking “name for name” those kidnapped and hoped the task would be completed within two weeks.
The announcement comes following confusion and controversy generated by contradictory figures of the number of people currently kidnapped within Colombia. The FARC claim only to have nine “economic prisoners”, while ONGs say they have at least 450.
