Colombia’s Vice President Angelino Garzon said Monday that the government of Juan Manuel Santos “has not closed the doors on making peace with the FARC,” reported newspaper El Espectador.
Garzon reported that independent of current circumstances, the president is still willing to make peace talks.
“Despite all these acts of violence, terrorism, and organized crime, President Juan Manuel Santos has all of the generosity to rebuild the road to forgiveness, reconciliation, and peace,” the official sustained.
However, Garzon’s peace statement came as a surprise since Santos has repeatedly stated that the Colombian government will only move forward with peace negotiations when they provide “valid an d convincing proof… that they want some kind of agreement.”
The Colombian president has often said, “I do not believe anyone should try to establish parallel channels to find a dialogue with the guerrillas. And I do not authorize any attempt in that direction. When we consider that the moment is right and the opportunity is there, then we will open this opportunity.”
