An unknown gunman shot a Dutch national four times on Saturday night before the attacker raced away on the back of a motorcycle in Colombia’s Caribbean coastal town of Barranquilla.
The Dutchman, 30 year old Aalten Winken, was walking in the streets of Barranquilla’s Barrio Ciudad Jardin, allegedly accompanied by four women, when a man drove by on a motorcycle and opened fire.
Winken was reportedly shot four times in the upper region of the spine, in the thorax, in the pelvis and near his face. He was rushed to Barranquilla’s Metropolitan hospital
“For the moment the type of activities undertaken [here] by the Dutch citizen are unknown, however some people that were found with him said that he is a merchant and was considering opening a business in the city,” said Colonel Gonzalo Carrero of the Metropolitan Police.
When asked whether the attack could have been involved in illegal activity, the colonel responded by saying that “the police have designated a group of investigators to clarify the point.”
Winken has been in the industrial port city for five months, reportedly living with a girlfriend.
