Colombia’s Under-17 World Cup dreams were crushed by a clinical Swiss side on Thursday, losing the semi final 4-0.
Following victories against Argentina and Turkey, Colombia were nowhere near as successful in the match with Switzerland, with disaster striking after just 14 minutes.
Colombian key defender Santiago Arias handled the ball in the penalty area and referee Michael Hester judged that by doing so, the youngster had prevented the Swiss from scoring. Arias was sent off and the following penalty was well taken by Nassin Ben Khalifa.
Haris Seferovic doubled Switzerland’s lead with a shot in the 36th minute, and Bruno Martignoni (50th) and Ricardo Rodriguez (68th) hit the target in the second half for a 4-0 final result.
The tournament isn’t entirely over for Colombia, who get to play for third place against Spain on Sunday. Later that day, Switzerland face hosts Nigeria to decide the championship.
