Valle governor election suspended because of floods

by Adriaan Alsema December 22, 2010

Colombia news - floods Valle

The Colombian government suspended the governor election in Valle del Cauca because floods in the department make the poll “impossible.”

Interior and Justice Minister German Vargas Lleras announced the decree that orders the indefinite suspension of the election.

According to the minister, the money that was allocated for the elections instead will be used to attend the emergency caused by floods in the department.

Interim-governor Francisco Lourido was asked to stay in office until further notice.

President Juan Manuel Santos warned on Monday that the government was considering suspending the election, because of the floods.

Voters in the south-western department will have to elect a new governor after the suspension of Juan Carlos Abadia, who illegally had promoted the presidential candidacy of former Agriculture Minister Andres Felipe Arias.
