The family of a US tourist who was critically injured while on holiday in Colombia is trying to get the money together for an air ambulance that can fly her home while the victim is fighting for her life.
Florida native Schuyler Arakawa suffered major head injuries when a rock fell on her head during a kayaking expedition in San Gil, a popular tourist destination in the center-northeast of Colombia.
Arakawa’s mother and sister are in Colombia to be with their loved one while friends and family set up a fundraising page to arrange an air ambulance and find the $200,000 necessary to cover medical costs not covered by insurance.
On Monday morning, the family had already raised $115,000, still $85,000 short to secure the adequate treatment and a safe flight home.
Arakawa has been in critical condition in the hospital of Socorro, a town near where the accident took place.
