The U.S. government Thursday accused four allies of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez of aiding Colombian FARC rebels by providing weapons and security.
The four include Congressman Freddy Bernal, Gen. Cliver Alcala Cordones, intelligence official Ramon Isidro Madriz Moreno and Amilcar Figueroa, who has represented Venezuela in the Latin American Parliament.
The U.S. Treasury Department said in Thursday’s statement that the four have collaborated with the leftist Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, which the U.S. considers a terrorist organization. It says that the Venezuelans often provided support of the FARC’s “narcotics and arms trafficking activities.”
