Former President Alvaro Uribe on Wednesday asked prosecutor general to investigate accusations that he had ties to one of the founding members of paramilitary group the United Self Defense Forces of Colombia (AUC).

Through his Twitter account, Uribe said the prosecutor general should investigate with whom he held meetings and had communications while he was still governor of Colombia’s northwestern Antioquia department.

Uribe’s comments came after alias “H.H,” a former member of the paramilitary AUC, said he had proof of “direct communications” between the former top leader of the group Carlos Castaño and then-governor Uribe in the period between 1995 and 1997.

“For reasons of honor, which for me goes further than juridical aspects, I ask the prosecutor general to investigate in totality my meetings, official visits, the few particular trips […] all the communications, etc., as governor of Antioquia” said the former president on Twitter.

Uribe is one of many Colombian politicians accused of having ties to former paramilitaries, in a process known as “Parapolitics.”
