TransMilenio collision in Bogota leaves 44 injured

A TransMileno crash in Colombia’s capital of Bogota has resulted in 44 casualties on Wednesday morning.The collision between two TransMileno buses, speculated by authorities to be due to speed, caused severe delays on the articulated bus routes and several diversions. Ministry of Health staff and transit police were on site.

This is one of many incidents this past year – in 2013 10 people died as a result of being run over by a TransMilenio vehicle.

However, according to a CODATU (Cooperation for Development and Improvement of Urban Transport and Peri-urban) report, since the implementation of the TransMilenio system there has been a 92% reduction of traffic related fatalities and a 32% reduction in the average commuters journey time.

Moreover, a satisfaction poll found that 98% of users were either deemed the TransMileno system to be very good or good.
