Thanks to the fortunate result of a coin toss, Colombia advanced to the
final round of the South American Sub-20 Championships following a 1-1
draw with Venezuela. Ecuador drew 2-2 with Argentina earlier tonight.
Colombia came close to scoring in the first half but hit the post instead. In the 42nd minute, hosts Venezuela took the lead through Salomon Rondon.
The Colombians equalised three minutes after the hour mark with Cristian Nazarith converting a penalty kick.
A 1-1 draw would leave Colombia tied with Ecuador, while this result was enough for Venezuela to qualify. The Colombians kept going for goal and got a perfect chance in the 93rd minute when given another penalty.
Nazarith this time looked less confident though, and his rather weak effort was easily saved by keeper Rafael Romo. His heroism earned earned the Venezuelans a spot in the next round while Colombia and Ecuador depend on a coin toss. Argentina are through as runners-up.
Update 10:34pm EST Colombia have won the coin toss and face Venezuela in their first Round 2 match. Ecuador end up eliminated.
