Three soldiers transporting some 300 kilos of cocaine were arrested in northern Colombia, local media reported Wednesday.
According to the reports the two active soldiers and one retired major were arrested Tuesday in the municipality of Plato, Magdalena.
The military members were arrested while trafficking the drugs along Colombia’s Caribbean coastal region, allegedly to deliver them to guerrilla-turned-narco “Megateo,” one of the most prominent drug traffickers along the Venezuelan border.
The suspects were almost immediately brought before a court where they were charged with the carrying and trafficking of illicit drugs.
The arrested members of the military to be charged with drug trafficking this year; In January, two soldiers were arrested when caught with half a ton of cocaine.
Following that arrest, Defense Minister Juan Carlos Pinzon and Armed Forces Commander General Alejandro Navas announced an investigation to establish whether a “drug trafficking cartel” is active within the armed forces.
