Colombia President Juan Manuel Santos will announce the beginning of formal peace talks with the FARC on Tuesday, radio station Caracol reported Monday.
Several media reported that the president has been finalizing the speech in which he will announce the first formal peace negotiations with the country’s oldest and largest rebel group in over ten years.
Both Santos and Foreign Minister Maria Angela Holguin said last week that more information regarding the talks would follow “within days.”
According to Caracol, the details will be given some time on Tuesday in a televised speech.
The negotiations, reportedly taking place in Norway in October, will be led by Liberal Party veteran and former vice-President Humberto de la Calle, the radio station added.
Santos confirmed last week his government had been having “exploratory talks” with the FARC, while media have reported that the government and FARC have signed a pact in which both parties outlined the conditions and goals of the talks.
FARC leader “Timochenko” on Monday also confirmed the talks.
