Prosecution orders arrest of former intelligence chief

by Adriaan Alsema January 7, 2011

Colombia news - Jorge Noguera

Colombia’s Prosecutor General ordered the arrest of Jorge Noguera, a former director of Colombia’s state intelligence agency DAS, for the his alleged involvement in the illegal spying on government opponents.

Noguera, who was director of the DAS between 2002 and 2006, is suspected of having set up the illegal activities of the DAS that included wiretapping supreme court magistrates, journalists, human rights organizations and opposition politicians.

The investigation has led to the criminal investigation of three former DAS directors, the chief of staff of former President Alvaro Uribe, the former press secretary and Uribe’s personal advisor, Jode Obdulio Gaviria, but none of these suspects in the wiretap scandal have an arrest warrant.

This not the first time Noguera has been sent to jail. He was imprisoned and released twice for his alleged involvement in allowing members of paramilitary organization AUC to infiltrate the intelligence agency. He has not been convicted for this.
