Pereira bans vuvuzelas from U-20 World Cup games

by | Aug 7, 2011

The city of Pereira has banned vuvuzelas from U-20 World Cup games. City officials made the announcement before Ecuador was to play Costa Rica and Nigeria was to face Saudi Arabia in a double-header Saturday at Hernan Ramirez Villegas Stadium.

Police officer Gustavo Londoño said the instruments were a nuisance during games. Some players had complained the vuvuzelas made communication difficult.

Vuvuzelas provided the soundtrack for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. They have made a comeback at the tournament in Colombia, especially in matches played by the host. There are no bans yet for other stadiums.
