Former Conservative Party Senator Oscar Josue Reyes on Monday handed himself in to the Prosecutor General’s Office in Bogota after the Criminal Court issued a warrant for his arrest.
Reyes has been accused of having ties with paramilitary groups in the Santander department. According to newspaper El Espectador, it is alleged that Reyes supported paramilitary groups in exchange for their help in running for the Senate.
In May, two former members of the Central Bolivar Bloc of the now-demobilized AUC paramilitary coalition declared to the prosecutor general that Reyes had connections with paramilitary groups.
Reyes is one of dozens of Colombian lawmakers accused of “parapolitics,” in a scandal which revealed the close links of Colombian politicians, businessmen, and military with paramilitary death squads.
