Girl dies in FARC attack on southwest Colombia town

A seven-year old girl died and six children and three adults were injured in a FARC attack on a rural community in the southwest of Colombia Friday.

According to several media reports, the girl was killed when an grenade exploded near a school just outside the town of Caloto, Cauca where FARC guerrillas and the army were involved in combat.

Some reports say one of the reportedly injured children has also died from her injuries.

According to the army, the attack was carries out by members of the FARC’s 16th front.

Caloto lies in an area where the FARC frequently carries out attacks on towns and the armed forces. The region is considered an important drug route from the Colombian inland to the Pacific coast.
