Spanish and French authorities on Tuesday arrested two alleged members of Basque separatist group ETA suspected of collaborating with Colombian guerrilla group FARC.
French police arrested Iraitz Guesalaga and Spanish police arrested Itxaso Urtiaga. The two are said to be partners.
According to Spanish authorities, Guesalaga spent time in Venezuela last year where he is suspected to have met with representatives of Colombia’s largest rebel group FARC.
Spanish justice has been investigating alleged ties between the two groups since early 2010 when it found letters between Guesalaga and ETA’s supreme leader “Thierry” wherein Gueselaga allegedly offered to go to Venezuela and meet with representatives of the FARC.
The arrests came less than a day after ETA unilaterally announced a cease fire.
