Former Cauca governor called to trial over alleged paramilitary ties

by Adriaan Alsema March 24, 2011

Colombia news - JJ Chaux

Colombia’s Supreme Court called the former governor of the Cauca department to trial to respond to allegations he made pacts with paramilitary death squads.

Juan Jose Chaux Mosquera will have to stand trial for his alleged ties to the AUC‘s Calima bloc.

The leaders of this bloc, Freddy Rendon Herrera alias “El Aleman” and Ever Veloza, alias “H.H.” testified before prosecutors they had met with the then-governor on several occasions.

According to the Supreme Court prosecutor, Chaux Mosquera has received electoral support of the paramilitaries.

The former governor and former ambassador to the Dominican Republic was arrested in May 2009.

Chaux Mosquera is one of dozens of congressmen, governors, deputies, mayors and council members who are condemned or suspected of having sought electoral gain through paramilitary intimidation.
