Government officials and Congress representatives met early Thursday morning at the Foreign Ministry, to discuss the concept a pending military pact with the United States.
At the meeting, Colombia’s Foreign Minister Jaime Bermudez explained why he believed there is no need for the agreement between Colombia and the U.S. to be reviewed by Congress, as suggested by the State Council, reported Colombian media on Thursday.
“The government is convinced that it has met all necessary requirements [with regard to the military agreement], there is no need to bring it to Congress … as the State Council requested, with regard to the transit of troops, because there will be no transit of troops here,” stated Bermudez beforehand.
The agreement between the U.S. and Colombia involves Colombia opening up at least seven of it’s national airbases to be used by the United States military forces.
