Colombia’s congress on Wednesday opened an investigation against ex-presidents Alvaro Uribe and Andres Pastrana for their alleged responsibility in losing Caribbean waters to Nicaragua.
Constantino Rodriguez, president of the Accusations Commission, confirmed the opening of the investigation to determine if the ex-presidents were responsible for the loss of maritime territory which surrounds the islands of San Andres and Providencia.
The Accusations Commission is a Congressional body, consisting of members of the House of Representatives, in charge of investigations against former presidents accused of crimes during their administration.
The investigation was opened after a formal complaint was made by chamber representative German Navas Talero, a member of the leftist Polo Democratico party.
In November 2012, the International Court of Justice granted large areas of sea near the island of San Andres to the Central American country of Nicaragua. Colombia‘s Supreme Court said Colombia must respect the court’s ruling.
