Ex-paramilitary commander convicted for recruiting child

Former paramilitary commander Ramon Isaza and his son Olviero Isaza on Tuesday were condemned to 36 months in prison for the “forced recruitment” of a 14-year-old girl.

According to the ruling of a judge in the Antioquia department, the victim “was recruited and trained in the use of arms by members of the group commanded by Isaza Gomez, alias ‘Terror,’” or “El Viejo.”

The girl was captured by the army in 2003 as a member of the Magdalena Medio Bloc of the paramilitary organization AUC, commanded by Isaza.

The paramilitary commander demobilized in 2006 following an agreement with the government of then-President Alvaro Uribe.

The AUC, like other illegal armed groups like the FARC and ELN, has been accused of having recruited hundreds of child soldiers between its foundation in 1995 and its official demobilization.
