Crime in Colombia down 11%: Santos

High profile crime in Colombia in the first four months of 2011 went down 11% compared to the same period last year, President Juan Manuel Santos said Saturday.

“Through the consolidation of these crimes, homicides, kidnapping, terrorism, continue to go down,” said Santos, adding that reports of physical assult, robbery and carjacking had gone down 10%, while the number of deaths and injuries in trafic incicdents had gone down 8%.

Santos was speaking about the time between January 1 and May 13.

Santos also stressed that in the course of the year, 664 members of illegal armed groups deserted and surrendered to authorities.
