Colombia’s interior and justice minister announced that 63 convicted members of the security forces will be transferred from military compounds to civilian prisons.
The 40 policemen and 23 soldiers have all been convicted for crimes unrelated to their work, like drug and arms trafficking or sex crimes.
Minister German Vargas Lleras also announced that members of the security forces who are convicted for crimes from now on will be sent directly to common prisons and will no longer be held in military facilities.
The announcement comes after reports of convicted members of the security forces disappearing from military bases or enjoying liberties other convicts do not have.
