Colombian mobile phone operator Comcel announced on Tuesday it is introducing high-speed internet for mobile phones in the country’s main cities.
The new HSPA+ technology will offer browsing speeds up to four times faster – between 1 and 1.2 megabytes per second – though its coverage will be limited initially to Bogotá, Cali, Medellín, Barranquilla and Pereira, newspaper El Tiempo quoted Comcel president Juan Carlos Archila as saying.
Rival mobile phone operator Tigo already provides a HSPA+ service in the main cities of Bogotá, Cali, Medellín, Barranquilla and Bucaramanga, though this is currently limited to use with USB modems.
It has announced plans to extend this service in the near future to HSPA+ compatible mobile phones, using a network of 1,000 base stations across Colombia.
