The United States thrashed Colombia 3-0 to reach the women’s World Cup quarter-finals on Saturday and could easily have doubled their score.
Heather O’Reilly got the opener with a powerful, dipping 25-meter shot in the 12th minute as the U.S. created a flurry of first-half chances in a one-sided affair.
Megan Rapinoe and Carli Lloyd scored in a seven-minute spell early in the second half to finish off the match as a contest, before Rapinoe and Abby Wambach hit the woodwork.
The U.S. have a maximum six points in Group C and qualified for the last eight with a match to spare alongside Sweden, who earlier beat North Korea 1-0 and also have six from two games. Colombia have zero after losing to Sweden earlier this week and have no chance of reaching the second round of the tournament.
