Colombia’s Defense Ministry Sunday highlighted the country’s success in its fight against terrorist attacks.
According to the government, the drop in kidnappings, massacres and bomb attacks has been dramatic over the past six years; the number of kidnappings dropped 88 percent,people killed in massacres dropped 96 percent and the number of terrorist attacks dropped 79 percent.
Even though this year the homicide rate is growing sharply again in many of Colombia’s cities, the Defense Ministry stresses that it’s still 44 percent lower than in 2002.
The Defense Ministry stressed the new rules and regulations implimented in the military to avoid human rights violations by the security forces and says to be working together with international agencies to improve the army’s human rights record.
