Colombia news - unemployed

Colombia’s average unemployment over 2011 was 10.8%, one percentage point less than the year before, the government’s statistics agency said Tuesday.

According to statistics agency DANE, unemployment has been dropping consistently since 2009 when unemployment over the year was 12%.

Unemployment in December was 9.8%, which was slightly higher than the 9.3% average unemployment in the last quarter of 2011, but 1.3 percentage points lower than the same month the year before.

According to the United Nation’s World Labour Organisation, Colombia’s unemployment rate is significantly higher than that of other countries in Latin America, where the average urban unemployment rate dropped to 6.8% in December against 10.4% in Colombia.
