Central Colombia bus crash kills 7, injures 8

by Adriaan Alsema May 3, 2013

At least seven people were killed and another eight injured in central Colombia Thursday when a bus crashed into a tank truck transporting crude oil from one of the nearby oil fields.

According to local media, the bus was traveling through the Meta department from the department capital Villavicencio to Puerto Lopez, a town located some 60 miles northwest of the capital Bogota.

The bus reportedly crashed head-on with the tank truck while the bus driver tried to overtake a vehicle. Following the crash, the tank truck caught fire.

At least three children were reported to be among the fatalities.

Victims were taken to hospitals in Villavicencio.
