Cali university director missing near New Orleans

by Adriaan Alsema May 23, 2011

Colombia news - Francisco Piedrahitas

The director of a Cali university has been missing since Saturday when he was dropped off in a wildlife park just south of New Orleans.

The superintendent of the Jean Lafitte Park and Preserve told American media the 65-year old Francisco Piedrahitas was last seen Saturday afternoon after he was dropped off by a taxi to take pictures.

Authorities began a search for the director of the Icesi University on Saturday night, but so far without success.

Federal law enforcement officers with the National Park Service and a JPSO search and rescue crew on Sunday began roaming the area on all-terrain vehicles, bicycles and on foot. Search dogs also were dispatched.

Jefferson Parish Sherrif’s Office spokesman John Fortunato told local newspaper The Times-Picayune that the Jefferson Parish crew plans to use a helicopter with a heat-sensing device in the search.

“Hopefully if this gentleman was in the woods, he can be located,” Fortunato said.
