Arrest warrant against former peace commissioner re-re-activated

by Adriaan Alsema June 23, 2012

Luis Carlos restrepo

Colombia’s Supreme Court on Friday revoked a decision by a lower court and reactivated a request for an international arrest warrant for a former aide of Alvaro Uribe, who is accused of having faked a FARC demobilization.

According to the Supreme Court, the Bogota tribunal that revoked the arrest warrant had illegally interfered in due process.

Former Peace Commissioner Luis Carlos Restrepo, a close ally of former President Alvaro Uribe and responsible for the controversial demobilization of paramilitary organization AUC, fled the country just before a court warranted his arrest over his alleged participation in the highly publicized but fake demobilization of a non-existent FARC front shortly before the 2006 presidential elections.

Restrepo is thought to be hiding in the United States, claiming to be the victim of a political persecution of Uribe allies.
