Army arrests 7 ‘Urabeños’ suspects

by Adriaan Alsema January 16, 2011

Colombia news - arrest

Colombia’s armed forces on Sunday announced the arrest of seven suspected members of drug gang “Los Urabeños” in the northern Cordoba department.

The arrest follows the murder of two students of a prestigious Bogota university in the north of the department.

The security forces launched an offensive against the drug gang that is held responsible for the double homicide.

On Friday, authorities said that eleven members of the gang voluntarily demobilized and two other alleged members of Los Urabeños were arrested.

Cordoba is one of the department that suffers the most of violence that erupted in many parts of Colombia after drug gangs like “The Rastrojos” and local gangs formed from the demobilized paramilitary organization AUC started contesting the region over control of the drug routes to the Caribbean. Colombia’s Vice President Angelino Garzon last week called these gangs “Colombia’s new enemy.”
