Afro-colombian community survives hardships through music (video)

by Adriaan Alsema July 23, 2011

Bajamar Buenaventura

Members of the afro-colombian community of Bajamar, a slum on the outskirts of the Pacific port city of Buenaventura are keeping their spirits up through their music.

The community lives in wooden shacks built on poles and mostly lives of fishing and the selling of fruits gathered in the coastal jungle.

Their music, heavily influenced by the community’s African roots, is what keeps the spirits of the community up despite their hardships.

News network Al Jazeera visited the community to document the artistic culture and the violence that is threatening the community.
