Colombia’s armed forces have killed at least five FARC guerrillas in a military offensive in the southwest of the country, local authorities said Sunday.
The combat took place on the border of the Cauca and the Huila departments where soldiers were fighting alleged FARC guerrillas for more than 12 hours.
According to the military, 11 rebels were injured in the attack.
The fighting came less than a month before the end of a unilateral truce called by the FARC in November.
The guerrilla organization is currently involved in peace talks with the administration of President Juan Manuel Santos. Both parties hope the talks will lead to a negotiated end of the country’s nearly 50-year-old armed conflict between state and rebels.
